Nepal established diplomatic relations with Australia on 15 February 1960. The Australian Government established a residential Embassy in Kathmandu in 1984 at the level of Chargé d’Affaires, which was upgraded to the Ambassadorial level in 1986. Following the decision of the Government of Nepal, constituted after the success of historic Peoples’ Movement 2006,  to have a residential embassy established in Australia, the Embassy of Nepal came into being in March 2007.  The establishment of a residential embassy in Canberra underscores the importance of evolving multidimensional relations between Nepal and Australia.  The Embassy is located in Canberra City, the national capital of Australia.
